These sessions are aimed at anyone of any kayaking ability wanting to get on the water, learn a few skills and have fun on the river. It will involve the use of both kayaks and canoes, and possibly raft building.
The session will run from 9.30am till 4pm (the scouts are usually slow at getting changed so pick up will be between 4.15pm to 4.30pm) at 14th Tonbridge Weir View HQ. The HQ is located at River Lawn, Tonbridge, TN9 1EP on the river Medway in Tonbridge.
The cost for the course will be £20 for both sessions or £15 for one session. Cheques payable to 1st Sevenoaks Scout Group. In the event of high interest we may have to limit places. Minimum attendance is 4 people.
These sessions will be wet. Scouts will not need any specialised equipment although wetsuits, wetboots and thermal tops are good purchases should they wish to do a lot more paddling, especially not in the summer months. As the activity will be outdoors, t-shirts and shorts will be suitable if the weather is warm and sunny, but a lightweight sweater and tracksuit trousers would be a good idea as well as a waterproof jacket as it can feel cold on the river (remember, you will need to be able to swim in whatever you wear!). Alternatively it may be worth investing in a wetsuit (can be found in places such as Decathlon in Lakeside fairly cheaply). Old trainers, plimsoles or wetsuit boots must be worn whilst paddling. A change of clothing is required.
All candidates must be happy to swim 50m in light clothing and then tread water for 5 minutes.
This is an easy river trip from Brockham in Surrey to Westhumble. This will be a short river trip (approximately 4km) and will be broken up with games and teaching sessions. The river does have a couple of sections of very simple moving water and a small weir to navigate. This trip is suitable for anyone with paddling experience (Paddlepower course/District Pool sessions) and ideal for those who haven’t yet done much on rivers.
The cost for the day is £5.
All meet at 9:15am at Riverhead Tesco car park.
Return to Riverhead Tesco car park at 5.15pm.
You will need warm lightweight layers to paddle in and non-bulky footwear, a packed lunch, towel and full change of clothes for when you finish (including shoes). Don’t forget hat, sunscreen if it’s warm. A helmet will be provided along with all other equipment and waterproof jacket. If you have a wetsuit only bring it if it’s cold on the day. Packed lunch will be needed.
